Maggie started life as a feral puppy on the streets of Mexico, and although she has thrived since finding her forever home with us, her early struggles left a lasting impact. Recently, we noticed she was hesitating to eat her food and required us to soak it in water to make it soft. Concerned, we took her to Dr. Kelly’s Low-Cost Vet in the East Valley of the Greater Phoenix Metro Area for a thorough dental check-up, X-rays, and a cleaning.
The Diagnosis: Enamel Hypoplasia
Thankfully, Maggie didn’t need any costly extractions, but the vet diagnosed her with enamel hypoplasia, a condition where the enamel of the teeth doesn’t develop properly, leaving them weak and prone to damage. Her teeth were covered in dark, unsightly tartar and she had very bad breath.
What Causes Enamel Hypoplasia in Dogs?

- Genetic predisposition in certain breeds (Maggie is part Chihuahua)

Without strong enamel, Maggie’s teeth are more susceptible to decay and sensitivity.
