Slow Living, Warm Kitchens, and the Heavenly Aroma of Amish Bread
In a world that often feels like it’s moving too fast, there’s something deeply grounding about kneading dough by hand. The rhythmic motion, the feel of flour on your fingertips, the rising anticipation, literally and figuratively, as your bread proofs in a warm corner of your kitchen.
At BLeaves Farms, baking isn’t just a chore or a recipe to follow, it’s a ritual. One that brings us together and wraps our home in the scent of comfort. There’s no better example of this than our cherished Amish-style white bread. It’s a favorite among our family, friends, and neighbors. Whether sliced warm with a generous smear of butter or turned into the perfect sandwich, this bread never sticks around long. It disappears faster than you can say “second slice”!
The Amish Way of Life, and a Belgian Draft Horse That Taught Us Something
The Amish are known for their simplicity, community, and deep-rooted connection to land and tradition. They embrace a slower, intentional lifestyle. One centered around faith, family, and craftsmanship. Their breads, made with love and care, reflect this beautifully.
Years ago, we welcomed a stunning Belgian Draft Horse to BLeaves Farms. An Amish-raised gentle giant who pulled carts before grazing peacefully in our pastures and trotting with us along the trails. Her strength, steadiness, and calm energy reminded us daily of what matters: presence, patience, and purpose. It’s that same spirit we aim to carry into our kitchen each time we bake this bread.
So now, let’s bring that same old-world charm and soul-nourishing simplicity into your home with this fresh-from-the-farm Amish bread recipe.
BLeaves Farms Amish-Style White Bread
Yields: 2 loaves
Prep Time: 15 minutes (plus rising time)
Bake Time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
- ⅔ cup white sugar
- 1½ tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 6 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions:
- Start the Magic: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Stir until dissolved. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit for about 10 minutes, until the yeast becomes foamy.
- Bring It Together: Add salt and oil to the yeast mixture. Then gradually mix in the flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Knead with Love: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 7–8 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. Feel free to take a pause and enjoy the tactile therapy.
- Let It Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean dish towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Shape Your Loaves: Punch down the dough and divide it in half. Shape into two loaves and place them into greased 9×5-inch loaf pans. Cover and let rise again until doubled (about 30 minutes).
- Bake to Perfection: Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes, or until golden brown and your house smells like a dream.
- Cool (If You Can Wait): Turn out the loaves onto wire racks to cool. Or slice it warm and let the butter melt into every fluffy crevice.
Farmhouse Kitchen Favorites
We believe the tools you use are just as important as the ingredients when it comes to creating something truly special. Here are two of our must-haves for making this Amish-style bread turn out perfectly every single time:
1. Cast Iron 9 x 5 Loaf Pans
These pans are a game-changer. Cast iron holds heat beautifully and helps create that irresistible, golden crust with a soft, tender inside just like grandma used to make. We love how they evenly distribute heat and last for generations.

2. KitchenAid Stand Mixer
While we love the meditative rhythm of kneading by hand, a KitchenAid mixer makes mixing dough effortless and consistent, especially on busy farm days. It’s a workhorse we can’t live without and will help you breeze through this recipe and many more to come.
