The Art of Balancing Passion and Overwhelm: Lessons from the Farm and Beyond

Life has a way of stretching us thin. Between a demanding career, personal commitments, and the ever-growing to-do list at Bleaves Farms, I often find myself pulled in a dozen directions at once. Some days, my focus is sharp, and I feel like I’m making real progress. Other days, my mind is scattered, weighed down by all the things that need to be done. Sound familiar?

Over the years, I’ve learned that balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly, it’s about knowing when to push forward and when to step back. Here are a few lessons I’ve taken from both the farm and life that help me stay grounded, even when things feel overwhelming.

1. Nature Has Its Own Pace, And So Should We

On the farm, nothing happens overnight. Seeds take time to sprout, animals need consistent care, and the seasons move at their own rhythm. When life outside the farm becomes chaotic, I remind myself that progress happens in stages. Instead of rushing to finish everything at once like a sprint, I try to focus on one meaningful step at a time and pace myself like a marathon.

2. Create Small Rituals That Keep You Centered

With a packed schedule, it’s easy to wake up and immediately feel like you’re playing catch-up. But I’ve found that small, intentional rituals, whether it’s reading the Bible, riding my bicycle to work, collecting eggs, drinking a cup of homemade lavender infused matcha lemonade, writing a blog entry, feeding the animals in the morning, taking five minutes to walk the orchard and garden, or even making a cup of chamomile tea, help reset my mindset. It’s about finding little moments of peace, even in the busiest days.

3. Accept That Not Everything Needs to Be Done Right Now

There will always be another project to tackle, another email to answer, another task waiting to be checked off. But just like in the garden, some things need time before they’re ready. It’s okay to prioritize, let some things wait, and trust that you’ll get to them when the time is right.

I’m a very goal-oriented person, so this is challenging for me. Jeff tells me to think of work like a river; I’ve got a 5-gallon bucket, and the goal should never be to empty it of water entirely, as it would be a losing battle. Just fill the bucket as I can, use the water as needed, and continue at a steady pace without the need to reach an ultimate end goal. Focus on the journey, experience and rewards.

4. Surround Yourself With Purpose

One of the biggest lessons from building Bleaves Farms has been the importance of surrounding myself with things (and beings) that truly matter, whether it’s the rescue animals that bring joy, the people who uplift and support me, or the work that aligns with my values. When life feels overwhelming, taking a moment to reconnect with why I’m doing what I do helps shift my perspective.

5. Know When to Pause

Just like overworked soil needs rest to stay fertile, so do we. Burnout doesn’t just come from doing too much, it comes from forgetting to replenish ourselves. Whether it’s an afternoon spent gardening, cooking a meal from fresh ingredients, or simply sitting outside and breathing in the air, pausing isn’t wasted time; it’s necessary for growth.

At the end of the day, balancing passion and responsibility isn’t about finding a perfect formula. It’s about staying present, embracing the ebb and flow of life, and giving yourself the grace to step back when needed. The farm has taught me that, and I hope this serves as a little reminder for you, too.
